Congrats a well deserved win. The piece is gorgeous. LIke you I was blown awy by the quality of both the winners and almost all of the entries. Must have been very difficult for the judges to decide. I'm glad they picked yours, your work certainly deserves to be viewed as fine art in a show.
Fractal art is based on fractal math a field of study that is less than 30 years old. Fractal math is based on doing repeated interations of the same equation with different input values. (Actually it's alot more complicated than that, but people tend to zone out on me at this stage if they aren't mathmatically inclined.)
There are several programs that are used to generate fratal images. This one was most likely made in Ultra Fractal (which is not free but fairly reasonable in price at least compared to say Photoshop). Another fractal generator which creates images with a differnt look is Apophysis. This one is free and readily available for download.

Congratulations on having this image chosen for the contest!

Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
Each day we will feature 10 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
When it comes to community spirit, `Rushy is a shining example. From participating in devmeets, to providing positive encouragement to other artists, `Rushy can always be found demonstrating what it really takes to be a true deviant. It's without any hesitation that we are delighted to award the Deviousness Award for July 2009 to `RushyRead More
